Natal Horoscope Explained

The word horoscope puts most people in mind of a few lines in a magazine. A natal horoscope is something else entirely, and far more personal. Here is what it is, and what it can tell you.

Horoscope does not mean what you think

The daily horoscope you read with your coffee is based on one thing only: your Sun sign, the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through when you were born. That is one planet out of ten, and it is shared by roughly a twelfth of everyone alive. It is no wonder the lines feel vague.

A natal horoscope, also called a birth chart, is the whole sky. It records where the Sun, the Moon and every planet sat at the exact minute and place of your birth. That arrangement is yours alone. Two people born in the same town minutes apart already have charts that differ.

What a natal horoscope contains

  • The Sun, which most people know as their star sign: the core of your identity and what you are here to express.
  • The Moon: your inner world, your instincts, the way you feel before you think.
  • The rising sign, set by your birth time: the way you meet the world and the way it first meets you.
  • The planets, from Mercury to Saturn and beyond: how you think, love, act, grow, and build.

A traditional reading weaves these into a portrait of your personality. It can be uncannily accurate. What it rarely gives you is something to do with the picture.

Reading the same chart differently

At Tarot Pathwork we take the very same natal horoscope and place it on the Tree of Life. The planets become seven living pathways, each one leaning toward its light or its shadow, so the reading becomes less about what you are like and more about how to live well with what you were given. That is the Kabbalistic approach to a birth chart reading, and it is where a natal horoscope stops being a description and becomes a map.
