Birth Chart Reading

The Planets and the Hebrew Letters

Long before the planets were read as personality types, an older tradition tied each of them to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Those pairings are the quiet engine behind a Kabbalistic birth chart reading.

An alphabet that builds a world

The Sefer Yetzirah, one of the oldest Kabbalistic texts, treats the twenty-two Hebrew letters as the raw material of creation. Three of them it calls mothers, tied to the elements. Twelve it calls simple, tied to the signs of the zodiac. And seven it calls the double letters, because each can be spoken two ways, soft or hard. These seven carry the seven classical planets, and each one names a part of life that can go two ways as well.

Why these pairings and not the famous ones

If you have read about tarot and Kabbalah before, you may have met a different set of pairings. In 1888 the Golden Dawn reassigned the planets to different letters, and almost every modern book has followed them since. Lucian Kabbalah returns to the attributions set out in the Sefer Yetzirah itself, in the older planetary order preserved in the critical text. It is not a new invention. It is the original reading, put back the way it was first written.

The important part is this: the pair of possibilities belongs to the letter, and the planet tells you where the energy comes from. Saturn on the letter Beth is about whether what you build endures or collapses. The Moon on the letter Tav is about whether your instincts lead you to mastery or to compulsion. When we read your birth chart, we are reading which way each of your seven pathways leans, and why.

You can explore each letter in depth in our guide to the twenty-two Hebrew letters, or see how the seven come together in a reading on the Kabbalistic birth chart reading page.
