Spiritual Hitchhikers: What They Are and How to Clear Low Vibration Entities

Spiritual hitchhikers are low-vibration entities that attach themselves to your energetic field, feeding off your energy and influencing your thoughts, emotions, and actions. These entities are not always malevolent in the traditional sense, but they operate from a dense, heavy vibration that can weigh you down emotionally, mentally, and physically. Think of them like unwanted passengers in your spiritual vehicle—draining your energy and steering your path in unhelpful ways.


How do these hitchhikers latch onto us? It often happens during periods of emotional vulnerability, trauma, or stress. Situations like illness, substance abuse, emotional breakdowns, or even spending time in energetically dense environments (such as hospitals, bars, or large crowds) can weaken your energetic boundaries. This makes it easier for low-vibration entities to slip in unnoticed. Additionally, engaging in negative thought patterns, unresolved grief, or consistent fear can act as open invitations to these energies.


Spiritual hitchhikers can range from benign lost spirits seeking light to more parasitic energies that thrive on fear, anger, or sadness. The purpose of their attachment to you, has nothing to do with you. In this case, think of energy as an economy. Those without higher vibrations, want as much as they can get - and will grab a hold of anything they can that passes by. Even you. Their presence can disrupt your well-being, intuition, and personal power.


Five Signs You Have a Hitchhiker


  1. Sudden Mood Swings or Intense Emotions You might experience unexpected waves of anger, sadness, or fear without any clear trigger. These emotions can feel foreign, almost as if they aren’t yours.


  2. Chronic Fatigue or Lack of Motivation Even with adequate rest, you may feel perpetually drained, lethargic, or unmotivated. Spiritual hitchhikers often feed on your energy, leaving you depleted.


  3. Intrusive or Negative Thoughts A spike in negative self-talk, obsessive thoughts, or even thoughts that feel unlike your own may be a sign of energetic interference.


  4. Feeling “Off” or Not Like Yourself A sense of being disconnected from your true self, intuition, or passions can indicate that something is clouding your energy field.


  5. Recurring Nightmares or Disturbed Sleep Night terrors, vivid nightmares, or the sensation of being watched while you sleep can point to spiritual hitchhikers active during vulnerable nighttime hours.


3 Methods of Cleansing and Protection


  1. Maintaining Your Space

    This is the first thing you should do and something that should always be in your daily life. Self-care. Getting your Ego in check, understanding your faults, understanding where you are going wrong. This begins with shadow work and most importantly, acceptance. You can read more about that here When we are stuck in negative patterns, it is easy to think it's somebody else's fault, or that if you just have more money/time/help/this gadget - then you will be able to get out of the situation.


    Remember, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Therefore the material follows the spiritual. You HAVE to be in the correct headspace to understand yourself better, to understand and be able to discern the different energies and entities around you. By getting good at this, which is a daily practice, the material gains will follow. However, it's not about belief, it's about observing yourself. Which is the hardest thing to do when you are stuck in a negative state or surrounded by a negative social network.


  2. Protective Shields and Affirmations

    Daily spiritual hygiene is essential. Visualize a protective bubble of light around you each morning, and repeat affirmations like, “I am sovereign in my energy. Only love and light may enter my field.” Protective talismans, such as crystals, symbols, or amulets, can also strengthen your energy shield.


  3. Energy Clearing Rituals

    Start with smudging your space and aura using sage, palo santo, or incense. As you cleanse, set the intention to release any energies that do not serve your highest good. Intention is all it takes, so as you get more experience - the use of sage will be less and less necessary.


    Visualization is powerful—imagine a bright white or golden light surrounding you, pushing out all dark, heavy energy. You can also call upon spiritual guides, angels, or protective ancestors to assist in removing any attachments.

  4. Salt Baths and Grounding Techniques

    Salt is a natural energy cleanser. Taking regular sea salt or Epsom salt baths can help draw out negative energies from your body and aura. Pair this with grounding techniques like walking barefoot in nature, meditating with crystals (black tourmaline or obsidian are excellent), or practicing breathwork to center yourself.
