Complete Path Map — All 22 Letters

Path numbers follow the standard numbering (11–32) used on the Tree of Life diagram. The "Sephiroth" column shows which two sephiroth each path connects. The Sefer Yetzirah column shows the attribution from the early recensions; the Golden Dawn column shows their modification. Green = agreement, red italic = departure.

* Strength / Justice Numbering: The GD swapped the numbers of Strength and Justice (making Justice=VIII, Strength=XI) to fit their zodiacal assignments. The SY order — Teth=Leo=Strength(VIII) and Lamed=Libra=Justice(XI) — actually matches the pre-GD Marseilles Tarot numbering, where the lion card is VIII and the scales card is XI. Waite later swapped them back to the Marseilles order in his deck.

What Changes When You Adopt SY Attributions

15 of 22 paths stay the same — all 3 mothers and 10 of 12 simples are identical between SY and GD. Your zodiacal pathwork is largely intact.

7 paths change completely — all 7 double-letter paths have different planetary attributions. These are some of the most important paths on the Tree:

• Path 12 (Kether↔Binah): Changes from Mercury to Saturn — The path from Crown to Understanding now carries the weight of time, structure, and limitation. Saturn descending from Kether into Binah (which is itself traditionally Saturn) creates a powerful resonance.

• Path 13 (Kether↔Tiphareth): Changes from Moon to Jupiter — The great vertical path from Crown to Beauty now carries expansion, mercy, and divine beneficence. Jupiter on the Middle Pillar makes more sense than Moon for this direct Kether→Tiphareth descent.

• Path 14 (Chokmah↔Binah): Changes from Venus to Mars — The Supernal horizontal path now carries the creative tension of Mars rather than gentle Venus. The friction between Wisdom and Understanding as generative force.

• Path 21 (Chesed↔Netzach): Changes from Jupiter to Sun — Solar energy connecting Mercy to Victory on the Pillar of Mercy. Radiance descending.

• Path 27 (Hod↔Netzach): Changes from Mars to Venus — The horizontal bridge between Splendour and Victory now carries beauty, harmony, and love rather than conflict. Venus bridging the two lower pillars.

• Path 30 (Hod↔Yesod): Changes from Sun to Mercury — The Messenger connecting Splendour to Foundation. Mercury at Hod (its traditional sephirotic home) flowing into Yesod.

• Path 32 (Yesod↔Malkuth): Changes from Saturn to Moon — The final path into the material world now carries the Moon rather than Saturn. The gateway between astral (Yesod) and physical (Malkuth) as lunar — reflective, cyclical, tidal. This actually makes far more sense than Saturn here.

The Theological Logic of the SY Planetary Paths

When you read the SY attributions on the Tree, something remarkable emerges: the planets descend in geocentric order as you move down the Tree. Saturn (furthest, oldest, most structured) sits at the highest planetary path near Kether. Moon (nearest, most mutable, most reflective) sits at the lowest path entering Malkuth. The heavens unfold from distant to near as emanation descends from Crown to Kingdom.

The Golden Dawn's arrangement has Saturn at the bottom (Path 32) and Mercury at the top (Path 12) — essentially inverting the cosmic order. Their motivation was preserving Tarot card placements, not cosmological coherence.

Your system, grounded in the Sefer Yetzirah, recovers the original logic: as you ascend the Tree, you move through the planetary spheres in their natural order — Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — until you pass beyond the planets entirely into the Supernal Triad where no planetary correspondence exists.

Important Caveat: The Sefer Yetzirah itself does not assign letters to specific paths on the Tree of Life. It maps them to a Cube of Space. The assignment of the 22 letters to the 22 paths between sephiroth is itself a later development. The path numbering (11–32) and their sephiroth connections shown here follow the standard Kircher/GD Tree layout. What the SY does definitively establish is which letter corresponds to which planet/element/sign. Using the correct letter-planet attributions from the source text delivers a direct alignment with the divine.
